Nació en Recreo. Y entre las calles polvorientas y pedregosas viajaba a Santa Fe para estudiar arte en la Escuela Provincial de Artes Visuales Profesor Juan Mantovani.
Fue en ese lugar donde se recibió con grandes honores y comenzó su etapa de artista plástico. Sus dibujos fueron una marca identitaria, distintiva. Fue ahí que se recibió como maestro, carrera que también construyó con pasión y amor.
Mas luego, en su vida, apareció el teatro. Y su dedicación fue hasta casi obsesiva.
El “Flaco” Juan Carlos Rodríguez, murió un sábado 16 de Junio de 2012. Había nacido en el año 2012 en Santa Fe. Tenía 65 años y soportaba -luchando con toda su quijotesca figura- una larga y muy penosa enfermedad.
TALENTO INDISCUTIDO
Todo lo que hacía, tenía su sello. El del talento indiscutido. Como artista plástico, como docente, como empleado público, actor, director. El teatro era su pasión y le brillaban los ojos cuando se hablaba de la escena local.
También estudió en el taller de Carlos Thiel, y del Teatro de Arte pasó se mudó a la escuela del Teatro Llanura en la Biblioteca Moreno, dirigida por los emblemáticos maestros Jorge Ricci, Jorge Conti y Ricardo Gandini.
Ahí nació Nuestro Teatro, otro grupo emblemático en la historia de las artes escénicas santafesina. Fue en ese lugar donde concretó su primer protagónico: “Mustafá” de Discépolo, un gran éxito de público.
Como lo fueron, de igual modo, “El jorobadito”, de Roberto Arlt; “La Biunda”, de Carlos Carlino; “Los disfrazados”, de Carlos Mauricio Pacheco o “Un pequeño dolor”, de Harold Pinter.
LT 10 EN SU PASO
EN la radio concretó dos programas en LT10, “Almacén de ramos generales” y “En el país de la noche”. La televisión santafesina lo contó como protagonista en programas como “Un periodista en el tiempo”, “Mi primo del campo” o “La oficina”. Con esto alcanzó una popularidad indiscutible. Incursionó, asimismo, como actor en varias películas locales.
LA CASA DE LA CULTURA
En el año 1991, -con la gobernación de Carlos Reutemann- fue designado director de la Casa de la Cultura, el edificio de bulevar Gálvez y Güemes. En ese ámbito desarrolló junto a sus colaboradores un foco de irradiación cultural que no puede olvidarse.
Diversas expresiones musicales, presentaciones de libros, conciertos de música clásica, de rock, muestras fotográficas, televisión, cine, teatro. Todos los artistas tenían en ese lugar la posibilidad de exponer sus obras, de mostrarse.
El flaco tenía siempre las puertas abiertas. Hasta que, como suele suceder, la ineficiencia y la ceguera de la burocracia oficial hicieron que se cerraran sus puertas para ser tapadas con plástico negro. La inundación del 2003 lo marcó puntualmente. Perdió gran parte de su obra, sus antecedentes, sus fotos, cosas queridas, historial, que poco a poco logró reconstruir.
EN UN PATIO DE TIERRA
En una nota de un diario local, le contaba a Ana Laura Fertonani que “cuando era chico, dibujaba en el patio de tierra de lo que era mi casa, y me disfrazaba con la ropa de mis padres; habíamos creado con un grupo de chicos un circo cuya carpa era un sauce y éramos trapecistas, payasos… locuras”.
Sintetizaba: “Me voy adecuando a las nuevas formas del pensamiento y a las nuevas formas o ideas de traducir en lenguaje artístico ese pensamiento. Creo que ahora estamos en una grave crisis cultural, los fines y principios de siglo nunca fueron fáciles, y nosotros todavía no sé si terminamos el siglo XX… creo que el arte va a terminar salvándolo a este mundo como siempre lo ha salvado. Siempre me creí un instrumento. Esto que nace de mí no me pertenece, tan sólo soy una vertiente, así lo siento…”.
Tan solo un grande como él ha podido transmitir en los diversos roles que ha interpretado las profundidades más lacerantes del ser humano.
Así como también las más felices.
No es un hecho menor que esta Santa Fe que muchas veces desconoce a los grandes hacedores de su cultura, esta ciudad que tanto amaba y a la cual dedicó tiempo, pasión, trabajo y obra.

He was born in Recreo. Among dusty and stony streets, he traveled to Santa Fe to study art at the “Profesor Juan Mantovani” Provincial School of Visual Arts.
It was there that he graduated with high honors and began his journey as a visual artist. His drawings became an identity mark—distinctive and unique. It was also there that he graduated as a teacher, a career he built with passion and love.
Later in life, theater appeared. His dedication to it became almost obsessive.
“El Flaco” (The Skinny One) Juan Carlos Rodríguez passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2012. He was 65 years old and had been enduring—fighting with his entire quixotic figure—a long and very painful illness. UNDISPUTED TALENT
Everything he did bore his personal seal: that of undisputed talent. As a visual artist, a teacher, a public employee, an actor, and a director. Theater was his passion, and his eyes would shine whenever the local scene was discussed.
He also studied in Carlos Thiel’s workshop, and from the Teatro de Arte he moved to the school of Teatro Llanura at the Moreno Library, directed by emblematic masters Jorge Ricci, Jorge Conti, and Ricardo Gandini.
It was there that Nuestro Teatro was born, another iconic group in the history of Santa Fe’s performing arts. In that setting, he landed his first leading role: Discépolo’s “Mustafá,” which was a massive public success. Other notable successes included “El jorobadito” by Roberto Arlt; “La Biunda” by Carlos Carlino; “Los disfrazados” by Carlos Mauricio Pacheco; and “A Slight Ache” (Un pequeño dolor) by Harold Pinter.
HIS TIME AT LT10
On the radio, he produced two programs for LT10: “Almacén de ramos generales” and “En el país de la noche.” Santa Fe television featured him as a protagonist in programs such as “Un periodista en el tiempo,” “Mi primo del campo,” and “La oficina.” Through these, he achieved indisputable popularity. He also ventured into film, acting in several local movies.
THE CASA DE LA CULTURA
In 1991—during the administration of Governor Carlos Reutemann—he was appointed director of the Casa de la Cultura, the landmark building at Boulevard Gálvez and Güemes. In that space, alongside his collaborators, he developed a center of cultural radiation that remains unforgettable.
Diverse musical expressions, book presentations, classical music concerts, rock, photography exhibitions, television, cinema, and theater—all artists had the opportunity to exhibit their work and find a platform there.
“El Flaco” always kept the doors open. Until, as often happens, the inefficiency and blindness of official bureaucracy led to those doors being closed and covered with black plastic. The 2003 flood was a turning point for him. He lost a large part of his work, his records, his photos, and cherished belongings—a history that he managed to reconstruct bit by bit over time.
IN A DIRT PATIO
In an interview for a local newspaper, he told Ana Laura Fertonani: “When I was a boy, I used to draw in the dirt patio of my house, and I would dress up in my parents’ clothes; with a group of kids, we had created a circus where the tent was a willow tree, and we were trapeze artists, clowns… madness.”
He summarized his philosophy: “I am adapting to new ways of thinking and new ways or ideas of translating that thought into artistic language. I believe we are now in a grave cultural crisis; the ends and beginnings of centuries were never easy, and I’m not sure if we have even finished the 20th century yet… I believe art will end up saving this world, as it always has. I have always believed myself to be an instrument. This that is born from me does not belong to me; I am merely a conduit, that is how I feel it…”
Only a great like him could have transmitted, through the diverse roles he interpreted, the most searing depths of the human being, as well as the happiest.
It is no minor fact that he gave so much to this city of Santa Fe—a city that often fails to recognize the great makers of its culture, yet a city he loved so much and to which he dedicated his time, passion, work, and art.
